Best AC in India (2019) – Buyer’s Guide

[su_note note_color=”#fff266″]Which AC is best? There are a lot of ac brands and models available in the market. They are enough to confuse you on your buying decision. With the help of the internet and Google, it is easy for the people to check the best suitable air conditioner for themselves. But still, there are a lot of aspects that you must need to consider before making your buying decision. This buying guide aims to help you shortlist the best AC brand and eventually best AC which suits your requirements.[/su_note]

Let us go check all the aspects one by one to derive the best AC in India.

How Does Air Conditioner work?

You need to understand the concept of the air conditioner. watch the below video to understand the basics of air conditioner functioning.

Construction of an Air Conditioner

In the window AC unit, there are 2 coils, 2 fans, and one compressor. Everything is packed in a nice metal box. Then there are pipes and knobs on it to control the indoor fan, temperature, and compressor.

In the outdoor package, there are knobs and they are bigger. One is for the supply duct system and another is for the return cool air. It is controlled remotely from a thermostat.

Construction of an Air Conditioner
Construction of an Air Conditioner

While a split AC has two units connected to each other via copper pipes set for the refrigerant. The outdoor unit has a coil, compressor, fan, filter drier, electrical panel. While the indoor unit has a coil, fan, electrical panel and expansion valve.

Both indoor and outdoor units require the appropriate electrical connection and components to work properly.

The above structure is only for the residential units. There are several other types of units that are being used for commercial applications. They are so big and far more complex than the one which we are using at our home or office.

Types of Air Conditioner

Before we move ahead, let’s first decide the type of AC suitable for you. There are different types of models available in the market. First thing you need to decide which air conditioner is suitable for you. Whether its window AC or Split AC. Let’s check the pros and cons of both windows and split AC. Let’s assess the requirement first and then discuss other factors that will help you to choose the best air conditioner in India.

  1. Window AC
  2. Split AC

Window AC has a single unit, while split AC has two units (indoor and outdoor). Window AC is easy to install while split AC is complicated to install and requires more space. Split AC look aesthetically pleasing.

Comparison between Window AC vs Split AC

  • Space
    • Split ACs require more space as there are two units (indoor and outdoor). But on the other hand, it doesn’t require a special window cut out.
  • Ease of Installation
    • Windows AC is easier to install as it doesn’t require to have wiring and pipe fittings. So if you are living on rent, window AC is preferable.
  • Sound
    • Split ACs are much quieter than Window AC
  • Looks
    • Split ACs are installed at above eye level and look aesthetically pleasing.
  • Cooling Effectivity
    • Split ACs are wide hence blow more air in the room.
  • Power efficiency and Pricing
    • Split ACs are costlier than window ACs. But it will compensate at the later stage as it is more efficient than window AC. Check the below chart comparison of Energy Efficiency Ratings.
BEE star rating for air conditioner
  • Maintenance
    • Well maintenance cost of both window and split AC is similar nowadays.

So based on the above comparison, I would suggest you go for split AC instead of window AC. Go for window AC only if you are living on rent and have to frequently change your house.

Pros and Cons of the Split Air Conditioner

As we know that there are two units in a split air conditioner as compare to one in a window air conditioner. Let’s look at the pros and cons of the split air conditioner.

Easy Installation: The indoor unit in a split air conditioner can be fitted easily on any wall of the room. You just have to hang the indoor unit on the wall of the room. It doesn’t require a window or a big hole to install the unit.

Low Noise Level: As the compressor is fitted at the outside of the room, the noise level in the split air conditioner is very low as compared to the window air condition where the compressor is fitted inside the room.

Energy Efficient: Since the split air conditioner is fitted outside and only the blower unit is fitted inside the room, there are fewer chances of hot air seepage in the room. Thus you will get higher energy efficiency.

Not suitable if you are living on rent: The installation cost is high for a split air conditioner. So if you have to frequently change the home, then it is not recommended to have a split air conditioner.

Now further going deep, there are two types of split AC available in the market. One is regular split AC and another is inverter AC. Let us first understand the difference between regular split AC and inverter AC. Regular split AC is we all know for a decade. The newly invented technology is an inverter air conditioner which consumes less energy and thus saves a good amount of money for you.

Your room size

Ask yourself below questions to come to the conclusion:

  • What is the area of your room you want to cool?
  • How high is the ceiling?
  • How many windows are there in the room?
  • How many walls of the room receives direct sunlight?
  • How many things are there in the room?

Here is a tonnage calculator which will help you to determine the size of the air conditioner you will be needed for the room you are planning to install the AC.

tonnage calculator

Your Usage Pattern

  • How many hours in a day you are going to use the air conditioner?
  • Is your usage is seasonal? (say summer)
  • How many people will be in the room when AC is used?

Electricity Consumption of AC

Buying AC is one thing but the high maintenance cost of electricity every month is something that arises in the mind of all AC buyers. This is the one point you must thoroughly check before making your decision for the best air conditioner in India.

How do you calculate your power consumption?

Usually, it is around 1.5 units/hour, provided the compressor is on all the time. This is not accurate but a rough estimate of the power consumption.

Have you ever check the label on the air conditioner carefully? You will see something like this:

This is the power rating of the AC under the standard and stable load and the compressor is constantly working. The power supply is exactly at 230 volts at 50 Hz. Under this condition, the AC consumes 1.5 units per hour.

But this is not what always happens. We set a room temperature and when that temperature is reached, the compressor gets cut off. It remains cut off until the room temperature rises above the set temperature again.

In such a situation the power consumption is as low as 0.06 units per hour. as the only fan is working not the compressor.

The measurement unit of electricity in kWh, it is also called BTU (Board of Trade Unit), which equals one-kilowatt load used for 1 hour.

Units = Power in Watts * time in seconds / 3600000
Units = Power in Watts * time in hours / 1000
Units = Power in kiloWatts * time in hours

You can measure the power consumption by these steps :

For while the compressor is working :

  • Note down the peak power usage from the label of your AC unit.
  • Now do the following maths :
Units Consumed = Power * Hours of usage / 1000
  • Calculate your projected consumption part 1

For while the circulating fan is working :

  • Take the power usage in this case as an average of 80 W.
  • Do the following maths :
Units consumed = 80 * Hours of usage while the compressor is off / 1000
  • Calculate your projected consumption part 2

Try this for the average time you use your air conditioner in a day, and add the two to get the daily units consumption. Multiply this with the cost of 1 unit of electricity (around Rs. 6) and you’ll get the bill for a single day. Multiply by 30 to get the monthly expenditure.

For example :

I use my AC unit for around 14 hours a day, at 24 degrees Celsius.

During the 14 hours cycle, my compressor works for about 4 hours, while for the rest of 10 hours, only the fan works.

Consumption Part 1 : 1500 * 4 /1000 = 6 units
Consumption Part 2 : 80* 10 /1000 = 0.8 units
Total Consumption : = 6.8 units
Bill for a single day : = 6.8 * 6 = 40.8
Bill for a month : = 40.8 * 30 = Rs. 1224

But the fact is, that never do you get the exact 230 V supply, nor does the operating conditions remain the same, so for the projected output, add an uncertainty factor of 20 % positive, and the value will be quite close to the actual consumption.

Keep in mind that this varies from AC to AC, and to get a fairly accurate reading is almost impossible.

Factors Affecting the energy consumption of the AC

There are multiple factors that affect electricity consumption. Below are the factors which affect the electricity consumption of the AC.

Room Size: This is the main reason for the electricity consumption as there is a direct co-relation between room size and energy consumption. Bigger the room size, higher consumption. The function of the AC is to remove heat from the room and thereby making it cool.

So it all depends on the room size. The electricity consumption depends on the heat present in the room. A 1.5 ton AC in a room of 120 sqr. Feet works differently as compared to the room size of 150 sqr. Feet.

The number of people in the room: Again there is a positive correlation between the number of people present in the room with energy consumption. The more people in the room, the higher is the emission of heat from the bodies.

So you need to have a high capacity AC where the number of people is more. A 1.5 ton AC in a room of 150 sqr. Feet with 3 people work differently as compared to the 10 people in the same room. So either you have to install a high capacity i.e. 2 ton or have the number of 1.5 ton AC. In the room.

Furniture and appliances in the room: Just like the number of people in the room, the furniture and other appliances in the room also affect energy consumption. It is recommended to use LED lights instead of simple bulbs as simple bulbs emit more heat as compared to LED lights.

So it requires more energy to cool the room if you are using simple bulbs. Same with the furniture, because AC needs to cool all the appliances and furniture available in the room.

Colors: Darker color absorbs more heat so it takes a longer time to cool. So it is always advisable to have a light color wall so the room temperature remains low at all the time.

How to Save Electricity Bill on AC?

Follow the below points and I bet you will be able to save a big chunk of money on your electricity bill.

  • Set the adequate temperature: Setting the low temperature doesn’t mean that it will cool the room faster. In fact, it means that the AC will consume high electricity until it reaches that desired temperature. So set the adequate temperature and you can save around 40% on your electricity bill. The standard temperature for AC is 24 to 26 degrees. This temperature will make you feel comfortable and is suitable for the human body.
  • AC Installation Height: The AC should always installed at the proper height on the wall. The best height is 1 foot under the ceiling. This is because the hot air (being lighter) rises up and the cool air which AC blows out gets heavy and moves down. So by installing the AC at the height, the room gets proper cooling fast.
  • Regular Service: In India, most of the households use AC in the summer season. After the summer they do not use it for the long term. So the dust gets inside the AC even when it’s not in use. You must get the filter cleaned before you start using it after a long break. You also must clean the filter at regular intervals in the summer as well. This will drastically improve the efficiency of the AC and saves you a lot of money on the electricity bill.
  • AC & Fan Duo: Set the desired room temperature and when it reaches that level, start a fan on the half speed. This will help to mix the hot and cold air properly and AC needs lesser power to cool the room thereafter.

What is Inverter Air Conditioner?

The traditional air conditioner works on a pre-set temperature. Once it reaches that set room temperature, the compressor will get an auto stop.

After some time if the room temperature goes above the set temperature, the compressor will again start and work on the full load to reduce the room temperature again to the set level.

Now let’s talk about the inverter air conditioner, and then we will check the best air conditioner in India.

The inverter technology (DC) is the newly invented technology wherein the inverter is used to control the speed of the compressor motor. Unlike, traditional air conditioner, an inverter air conditioner is adjusting its speed of the compressor based on the temperature.

inverter ac power saving

The ability of an inverter air conditioner to control the speed of the compressor eliminates start-stop cycles resulting in fewer breakdowns, less maintenance cost, and higher energy efficiency.

This way the inverter compressor uses less amount of energy to maintain the temperature. In the inverter air conditioner, the compressor will continuously run but it auto-adjust its compressor speed based on the temperature.

The inverter air conditioner has increased the efficiency of energy. Not only that, but it also helps to avoid any sharp fluctuation in the load resulting in extended life of their parts.

It also helps to make an inverter air conditioner quieter. Maintenance of the inverter air conditioner is less as compared to the traditional split air conditioner.

The initial cost of the inverter air conditioner is high but the same can be compensated by the savings on the electricity bill. The payback time is approximately two years but can vary as per your usage.

We will evaluate the best air conditioner in India specifically for the inverter air conditioner at the later stage in this article.

Pros and Cons of Inverter Air Conditioner

Energy Efficient: The main benefit of the inverter air conditioner is it is energy efficient. It can save around 30% on the electricity bill. So if you are using it for your office where the usage is for around 8 hours a day, then definitely it will save a good amount of money.

Less Noise: As the inverter air conditioner works constantly at the lower power supply, the noise level is less as compared to the regular split air conditioner.

High Initial Cost: Inverter technology is costly as compared to the traditional air conditioner. You have to pay around 8-10 thousand extra at the time of purchase as compare to the regular AC. This initial extra cost can only be compensated if you are running the air conditioner for at least four hours a day that too regularly.

So if you are planning to buy AC for your office where you will use it regularly, then it is fine, otherwise if it for household purpose, then think twice before you spend that extra 10 thousand initially.

Difference between Inverter and Non-Inverter Air Conditioner

The main difference between two is the inverter AC has the capacity of running at the variable speed and tonnage. While the non-inverted AC does not have this facility.

The room’s requirement is always different. In summer when there is high heat in the room, while in winter the requirement is low. Also, it depends on the number of people available in the room. Which is again not constant.

Practically, your room’s requirement is never constant. The regular AC which starts at the full load and runs till it reaches the set temperature, it shuts off the compressor and will starts again when the room temperature again rises above the set level.

Hence, you need an AC which also adjust itself according to the requirement of the room at different time. I would say the inverter type is the best air conditioner in India.

Here is the BEE data for the year 2018 which shows the power consumption of various air conditioner units at different tonnage and ratings. The data assumes total consumption for 1600 hours.

We can easily make it out that when the star ratings are high, the power consumption is low. It is clearly coming out that the inverter AC is consuming less energy as compared to the regular AC.

How homeowners can save money on AC filter cleaning

There are several ways to save money re AC filter cleaning:

For this, you need to have a second set of AC filters ready with you. You can order the second set of filters. If you have a second set of filters handy, means you are all ready to go without having to wait for them to be washed and dried.

Here you have your own time for washing the dirty filters in your leisure time.

Do wash the AC filters in the early morning so that they can dry soon. In the morning since the heat in the atmosphere is not that high, you can stay without AC for a while.

Wash your filters and let it dry. You can order the extra pair of filters if you need to.

It is actually easy to access, remove, wash and refit the AC filters. You can do it yourself if you once know how to clean the AC filters. You can mark the direction of the airflow on the filters before you remove them.

Wash out the dirt from the clean side first to loosen the dirt, then reverse the filter and wash the dirty side.

The time needed to wash the AC filters depends on several factors like:

  • Type of the air conditioner
  • Number of the filters
  • Ease of access to the filters
  • How dirty filters are
  • Time to access and retrieve the filters
  • Take the filters to the appropriate place where they need to be a wash
  • Washing time and drying time

Best Air Conditioner – FAQs

Home Appliances are such things that we buy it once in ten years. So people have lots of doubts and confusion. It is better to clear all your doubts before you make your buying decision. So, later on, you will not regret the product which you will use for the next ten years.

Which is the best AC brand in India?

There are many brands in India. I cannot tell you this one is best or that one is best. It all depends on your usage, room space, energy consumption and so on. If you have read this entire guide, I am sure all your doubts are clear by now. Choose the AC which fits your requirement, don’t just go with the brand name as a buying criterion. Usually, you must check the energy consumption, maintenance cost, initial buying cost.
The guide and comparison above conclude that inverter AC is the best one to buy. It saves a good amount of money on a regular basis. Though the initial cost is slightly high as compare to non-inverter AC, it pays off at the later stage.
LG, Samsung, Hitachi, Mitsubishi are the famous brands in India who are manufacturing AC.
Choose the AC from any of the above brands which give maximum benefits and suit all your requirements.

Which Star Rating Would Be Good For Me?

Higher the rating higher energy efficiency. But that doesn’t mean that you should go for 5 stars rating only. It all depends on your usage. Although, we do not recommend any AC below 3 stars. You need to do a simple math here. Calculate your monthly usage and derive the cost of running the AC for those hours per month. Then check the difference between inverter AC price and non-inverter AC price. The differential amount is the one that you need to compare with the energy/cost savings. By doing this you will come to know about the payback period of your initial investment. If it suits your budget, go for that or else you can choose the different rating AC.

Do I Need to Purchase the Stabilizer Separately

Every air conditioner comes with the voltage limit. Check the limit before you buy. It is usually printed on the label. Now check the voltage fluctuation you are getting in your house. If the fluctuation is beyond the acceptable limit, then you should buy the stabilizer.

What is Inverter ACs?

The inverter is the latest energy-saving technology which can save up to 30% on your electricity bills. In the inverter technology, the compressor doesn’t get cut off, instead, it runs on the low voltage for the constant time and maintains the room temperature. Read the details in the above article to understand it thoroughly.

Which brand gives the best after-sale service?

Well, this one is hard to confirm. It depends on various factors like model, the area you are living in, the age of the AC and many more. Usually, it depends on the technician who is going to visit your home for service. Even within the same city, the service levels are different. The only person who has experienced the service can give you real feedback.

Is it safe to buy AC online?

Yes, of course! Buying AC online from the reputed online store is easy and cheap. If you have chosen the model, you can easily go online and order the same. You can get good deals and discount through online portals. Also, you can check and compare various models at the same place. You can order the AC online and the company will deliver the same at your doorstep.

Is the maintenance cost of inverter AC is higher than the normal split AC?

With the Inverter AC, you may save high on electricity bills, but the initial cost of buying inverter AC is much higher than the normal split AC. Also, the maintenance cost of the inverter AC is very high. The entire inverter AC is depended on the circuit. If that circuit fails the replacement cost is around 25000. It is better to buy a new AC rather than replacing the circuit for the existing AC.

Do inverter ACs last longer than normal ACs?

The average age of the AC is around 7-8 years with good maintenance. Inverter ACs are not preferable at the coastal area since salt deposits on the inner part of the outer units leading to malfunctioning of the PCB, which is the main controlling part of the entire AC. The cost of replacing PCB is so high that it is better to buy a new AC instead.

Best AC Brand in India
