The income tax department has reduced the timeline for ITR E-verification from 120 days to 30 days. It is mandatory to either submit the physical copy of your ITR (Income Tax Return) to Bangalore office or you can get the same ITR E-Verification online. Many of you may be thinking that mere submitting the ITR online is sufficient and your ITR will be processed. But, please note that the ITR will not be processed until it is E-verified by the tax payer. In this article, I will explain you the step-by-step process of how to do ITR E-Verification by yourself.
What is E-Verification of ITR?
Individual tx payer whose ITR needs to be filed by July end, has to submit the relevant ITR form. Once the ITR form is submitted online through Income Tax portal, a tax payer needs to verify the same online. Once the ITR form is E-verified the income tax department then will check your ITR form and process the IT return. The process of ITR E-verification is very simple and can be done within minutes. Below is the step-by-step guide on how to do ITR E-Verification by yourself.
Step-by-step guide on ITR E-verification
- Go to the Income tax portal.
- Login to the portal with your PAN number and password.
- Go to the E-file tab > Income Tax Return > File income tax return.
- You will see “E-verification” tab on the menu.
- Click on the tab
- It will show you the pending E-verification ITR.
- Select the ITR you want to E-verify.
- Click on next button.
- It will ask your permission to send OTP on Aadhar linked mobile number.
- Give your consent, and OTP will be received on Aadhar linked mobile number.
- Enter the OTP you have received and click on the Submit button.
- Your ITR is now “E-verified”.
Your selected ITR is verified and you will see the below status on the “Dashboard”. Here you can see the ITR submission date and verified date separately. The next step as shown in the below picture is “Processing your return by IT department”. You don’t have to do anything now until there is any query raised by the IT department. If there is no query in the income tax return submitted by you, the same will be processed by the IT department and you will get the acknowledgement number. This process will take about 5-6 months.
The entire process of E-verification will not take more than 2-3 minutes. So please e-verify your ITR which you have submitted. The deadline of e-verification is 30 days from the date of submission of ITR. If the same is not verify within 30 days, the submitted ITR will be treated as invalid and you will have to pay the penalty charges on the new ITR submission.
Alternatively, there is a quick link provided on the IT website. You will see the same on the left side top corner, first link “E verify return”. Click on that link and select the financial year for which the ITR is filled. You will also have to enter the ITR acknowledgment number which you have received after submission of ITR online.
